Conditioner or mask, that is the question! We often tend to confuse these two important hair products, but apart from the consistency, which may be more or less fluid, what are the differences between hair conditioner and hair mask? What are their main functions? When should you use conditioner and when should you use a mask? Let's find out together!
Difference between conditioner and mask
The difference between conditioner and mask is not that clear, if we consider the fact that we are talking about two products both capable of giving softness and shine to the hair. But the benefits they provide to the hair do not stop at the external appearance alone, in some cases also acting on the hair structure, bringing significant improvements to the hair.
Basically, the main difference between these two fundamental hair care products is that conditioner is applied to soften and detangle the lengths after shampooing, while the mask is essential to give the hair the necessary nourishment. In addition to the different ingredients and consistency, conditioner and mask differ in the time of application on the hair: usually conditioner has a much shorter processing time than that traditionally required by the mask, which is why the purposes and benefits they bring to the hair can be very different depending on the product used.
Conditioner and mask share the same usage methods: both haircare products are not applied to the roots of the hair, but must be distributed on the ends and along the lengths after cleansing. Therefore, after having carried out the final rinse to definitively remove the shampoo and after having eliminated the excess water, a small amount of product is applied to the towel-dried hair along the lengths and on the ends. Using a wide-toothed comb, distribute the conditioner or mask evenly, detangling any knots and letting it act on the hair for the necessary time. Then rinse with plenty of lukewarm water to eliminate all residues.
How to apply conditioner
Hair conditioner is a product with a very light formulation that does not penetrate deep into the hair. Its main function is to detangle knots, preventing the hair from tangling and breaking, making the hair soft, light, and silky to the touch. Suitable for frequent use, apply a dollop of conditioner after shampooing, distributing it well along the lengths, then rinse with plenty of lukewarm water to avoid weighing the hair down too much and finally pat dry with a towel.
The conditioner does not require long processing times since its action is instantaneous: it is recommended to leave the conditioner on for a couple of minutes before rinsing, however, it is also possible to rinse the product immediately after application. Conditioner is not recommended for those with particularly fine and straight hair, as it could weigh the hair down too much or not provide any visible result, thus making its use useless.
There is also leave-in conditioner, to be applied directly after cleansing on washed and towel-dried hair. Just a few drops or sprays on the lengths and ends are enough to get softer, hydrated, and detangled hair immediately. It is advisable to let the leave-in act on the hair for a few minutes before blow-drying.
How to apply the mask
The mask has a nourishing and repairing function for the hair, it acts deep down, hydrating and nourishing even the driest and most brittle hair, making it more vigorous, soft, and shiny already after the first uses. The mask is applied after shampooing and, if necessary, after conditioner. Depending on the type of product chosen, the mask's processing times can vary from a minimum of 5 minutes up to a maximum of 30 minutes; after the processing time indicated on the packaging, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water to remove any product residue and finish with drying. After the mask, the hair will appear lighter, silkier, and extremely shiny.
On the market, you can find different types of masks, but mainly each mask has a restructuring and polishing function on the hair. While conditioner is created for daily use, the mask is applied once or twice a month: frequent and excessive use of nutrients, in addition to not being necessary, would risk weighing down the hair, neutralizing the effect.
